Studying Law in MMU
Wednesday, 9 November 2016
Hello! I received quite some questions on studying law in MMU these days so I decided to write a post about my experience and some "tips" for taking law in MMU.
A little background info: After SPM, I came to MMU to study Foundation in Law for one year. After that, in June 2016, I continued my Law Degree here as well.
So here are some info and tips!
MMU's Law courses (foundation and degree) are only offered in MMU Melaka campus. So you'll have to come to the Historical City if you want to do law in the only private uni in Malaysia which offers LLB exempted from CLP.
So let's start on the Foundation in Law and LLB (Honours):
So basically the foundation course is a one year programme which leads to LLB. The only intake for both Foundation and Degree in Law is the June intake. When I applied for Foundation, I was told that they only take in about 200 students per intake. Not sure how true that is tho.
MMU practices the trimester system, so the sequence will be two long trimesters (14 weeks of classes, 1 week of midterm break OR study break, and 2 weeks of exams), and one short trimester (7 weeks of classes, 1 week break, and 1 week exams).
To enter into LLB, foundation students will need to pass all subjects AND obtain a MUET Band 4. The MUET qualification is applicable to other Pre-U students as well. For the requirements for qualifications other than FiL, please check with the uni. It's on MMU's website.
(Update: as per 2018, MUET is not required for entry)
SO! After completing Foundation in Law, one may proceed into the CLP-exempted LLB programme.
Bachelor of Law takes Four years to complete, and it includes a legal attachment in the short trimester in Third year.
As per June 2016, the MUET graduation requirement for LLB is Band 4.
Oh and it's also useful to know that law subjects are only offered once a year, which means that if you fail even just one subject, you might have to stay on for another year (if it is a two-part subject).
With regards to Accommodations around MMU Melaka:
There are many places to stay in which are within walking distances. I'll list them all down.
1. Ixora Apartment
Within 10 minutes walk to campus. You can look up on Ixora here.
2. Emerald Park/ Emerald Residence
Within 10 minutes walk to campus. This is this webpage.
3. Residential Area around Bukit Beruang (Taman Dahlia, Taman Bunga Raya, Taman Kerjasama etc.)
Ranging from 5-30 minutes walk to campus. You can check for vacancies in this Facebook Group created by MMU Students on House Rentals nearby.
Er, so that's all that I can think of for now. Do email me at leaudrey30@gmail.com if you have any questions or if you're coming to MMU and would like to say Hi!

Law will be hard if your English is not good, but it's definitely doable! Just make sure you do your best in improving your English!

DeleteIf my muet get band 3 only so can i still study law degree in mmu because i see the entry requiment of law degree is muet band 4 but this article say that the muet is nor required for entry so really get confused about which is the correct information
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know, entry from Foundation to LLB does not require MUET now. Not sure about direct entry to LLB. Perhaps you can call up MMU to inquire.
